What is white lightning?

White lightning typically refers to homemade or illicitly-produced moonshine, a high-proof distilled spirit that is typically clear and unaged. Moonshine has a long history in the United States, particularly in the Appalachian region, where it was traditionally made by distilling corn mash in homemade stills.

White lightning gets its name from its high alcohol content, which can often exceed 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume) and give it a potent kick. It is typically consumed straight or mixed with other beverages to create cocktails.

Despite its popularity in some regions, white lightning is illegal to produce and sell without the proper permits and licensing. Homemade moonshine can be dangerous to consume due to the amateur manufacturing process and lack of quality control, which can lead to methanol contamination and other health risks.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in craft distilling, leading to the production of legal moonshine, which is often marketed as a premium spirit with unique flavors and a smoother finish.
